January 14, 2026 — The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) released China’s automobile production and sales data for December 2025 and the full year of 2025.
01 Overall Performance
In December, automobile production and sales reached 3.296 million units and 3.272 million units, respectively, down 6.7% and 4.6% month-on-month, and down 2.1% and 6.2% year-on-year.
For the full year of 2025, automobile production and sales totaled 34.531 million units and 34.40 million units, representing year-on-year growth of 10.4% and 9.4%, exceeding expectations set at the beginning of the year.
China has ranked first globally in annual automobile production and sales for 17 consecutive years.
02 Passenger Vehicles
In December, passenger vehicle production and sales reached 2.879 million units and 2.847 million units, respectively, down 8.4% and 6.3% month-on-month, and down 4.2% and 8.7% year-on-year.
For 2025 as a whole, passenger vehicle production and sales reached 30.27 million units and 30.103 million units, up 10.2% and 9.2% year-on-year.
03 Commercial Vehicles
In December, commercial vehicle production and sales reached 416,000 units and 425,000 units, respectively, up 7.4% and 8.5% month-on-month, and up 15.5% and 15.3% year-on-year.
For the full year of 2025, commercial vehicle production and sales totaled 4.261 million units and 4.296 million units, representing year-on-year growth of 12% and 10.9%, respectively.
04 New Energy Vehicles (NEVs)
In December, NEV production and sales reached 1.718 million units and 1.71 million units, respectively, up 12.3% and 7.2% year-on-year.
NEVs accounted for 52.3% of total new vehicle sales during the month.
For 2025, NEV production and sales reached 16.626 million units and 16.49 million units, up 29% and 28.2% year-on-year.
NEVs accounted for 47.9% of total new vehicle sales, an increase of 7 percentage points compared with the previous year.
05 Exports
In December, automobile exports reached 753,000 units, up 3.5% month-on-month and 49.2% year-on-year.
For the full year of 2025, automobile exports exceeded 7 million units, reaching 7.098 million units, representing a 21.1% year-on-year increase.
06 Chinese-Brand Passenger Vehicles
In December, sales of Chinese-brand passenger vehicles reached 1.958 million units, down 5.1% year-on-year, with a market share of 68.8%.
For 2025, Chinese-brand passenger vehicle sales totaled 20.936 million units, up 16.5% year-on-year, with a market share of 69.5%.
07 Outlook for 2026
According to CAAM forecasts, in 2026, China’s automobile production and sales are expected to reach 34.75 million units, representing a year-on-year increase of approximately 1%.
